PT Andika Permata Sawit Lestari (APSL)

SUBJECT

A report by The Guardian and The Jakarta Post published on 6th September 2016 accusing PT. Andika Permata Sawit Lestari (APSL) of illegal burning and preventing smog inspectors from performing an investigation at its concession through intimidation. The allegation of illegal burning was further supported by a report from ChannelNewsAsia.com on 20 September 2016 showing a burned area which was alleged to belong to APSL.

PROGRESS

1 Sept 2016:
Apical engaged with the management of PT. APSL requesting for official clarification in respect of the allegations. APSL responded on 2 September 2016, maintaining that the case had now been resolved.

22 Sept 2016:
Apical made another request to APSL for documented evidence of official letters on the investigation results.

22 Aug 2017:
Apical has requested latest update of the case based on the visit by our consultant to confirm next possible steps.

We are aware of an ongoing Government investigation into the incident, which we will monitor, while continuing our direct engagement with APSL.

August 2023:
In June 2023, Apical engaged with the APSL management. Based on the clarification received, the fire originated from outside the concession, a police report was made and a suspect was arrested for arson. Since then, APSL have put in place policies, procedures and preventive measures for early detection of fires. There has also been no incidents of fire/burning reported after 2016.

Based on the actions taken by APSL, Apical regards this case as resolved.
