SUBJECT
In June 2024, Friends of the Earth, Walhi and Milieu Defensie published a report titled ‘Cultivating Conflict – How Astra Agro Lestari, Brands, and Big Finance Capitalize on Indonesia’s Governance Gaps’. The report implicated multiple Astra Agro Lestari (AAL) subsidiaries, plantations and mills on allegations of overlapping concession areas with forests, illegal palm oil plantation forest estates, operating without cultivation permits and brands that source from these mills and plantations with the above issues. One of the allegations was against PT. Letawa, an AAL mill.
PROGRESS
July 2024
Apical conducted its internal investigation and identified through its traceability information and engagement that PT. Letawa is sourcing Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) from PT. Mamuang. PT. Mamuang has an existing grievance related to social conflict involving indigenous communities and farmer groups. They have developed an action plan in collaboration with Eco Nusantara to resolve the issues by 2026.
August 2024
Apical has decided to stop sourcing from PT. Letawa until AAL commits to stop sourcing from PT. Mamuang or demonstrates progress in the implementation of actions as per the developed action plan.
