Enabling Low-Carbon Energy Transition

As the world puts more focus on sustainability, the move toward low-carbon energy is becoming increasingly important. Through our Green Energy Program, Apical plays a role in this transition by providing renewable fuels that help reduce carbon emissions, particularly in industries such as transportation and energy.

We provide fuels that keep industries running while reducing their environmental impact. To do this, we follow well-established sustainability and traceability standards, and we’re proud to be certified by organizations such as International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). These certifications show that we’re serious about making our sourcing and production responsible and transparent.

Circular economy principles guide how we produce our renewable fuels. By using waste and residue-based feedstocks, including used cooking oil and other by-products, we turn materials that would otherwise be discarded into valuable energy. Backed by our integrated supply chain, we can do this responsibly and at scale, helping make renewable energy more accessible and widely used.

Apical’s Renewable Fuel Portfolio

Apical offers a variety of renewable fuels to meet the rising global demand for cleaner energy. Each product is designed to serve different needs in transport, industry, and daily life. Our product range includes:

Biodiesel (FAME)

Biodiesel, also known as Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), is a renewable fuel that offers a cleaner choice compared to regular diesel. At Apical, we produce biodiesel mainly from waste materials such as used cooking oil and by-products from palm oil and vegetable oil processing.

Using biodiesel helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers the carbon footprint of both vehicles and industries that rely on diesel. In fact, a life cycle analysis by Argonne National Laboratory found that emissions from 100% biodiesel (B100) are 74% lower than those from petroleum diesel.

Our biodiesel is designed to perform efficiently across a wide range of applications, helping industries make the transition to cleaner energy without sacrificing performance.

Usage:

  • Transportation fuel
  • Power generation and industrial machinery
  • Heating and boiler fuel
  • Marine and agricultural applications

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a bio-based fuel created for the aviation sector. It is produced from renewable waste materials such as used cooking oil and other organic residues, offering a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel. Because SAF works with existing aircraft engines, airlines can begin using it without the need for technical modifications or major investments in new equipment.

Apical is working with Moeve on a new second-generation biofuels facility in Huelva, Spain. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2026. Once operational, it will produce up to 500,000 tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel each year, using waste and residue-based feedstocks. This facility will help increase the supply of lower-carbon fuels and give airlines a reliable option as they work toward their climate targets.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)

HVO is a renewable diesel that matches the performance of fossil diesel. It is a paraffinic fuel with no oxygen content, and delivers high cetane, good stability, and low sulfur. It works in existing diesel engines and distribution systems without engine changes.

Studies on ScienceDirect show that HVO can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 60–95%, depending on the feedstock and production method. At Apical, we produce HVO by refining waste and residue-based feedstock such as vegetable oils, animal fats, or waste oils using hydrogen. This process removes oxygen from the oils, stabilizes the molecules, and creates a clean, high-quality fuel. HVO performs just like traditional diesel, but with a much smaller carbon footprint.

Usage:

  • Drop-in renewable diesel for transportation
  • Power generation and heavy machinery
  • Marine and aviation applications

By-products for Circular Economy

At Apical, we understand that making renewable fuels is just part of the story. That’s why we take an active role in the circular economy. Instead of letting by-products from fuel production go to waste, we repurpose them into valuable materials.

By-products such as glycerin, fatty acids, and other residuals are recovered and processed for use in industries including biochemicals, cosmetics, animal nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications. This helps reduce waste, use resources more efficiently, and ensure the benefits of renewable fuel production extend beyond energy alone.
