On 18 July 2019, Mighty Earth released the Rapid Response Report 17. The report alleged PT Prima Sawit Andalan (PT PSA), a subsidiary of DSN Group of clearing 4 ha of forest between 2 May 2019 and 6 July 2019.

On 11 Oct 2019, Mighty Earth published the Rapid Response 20. The report alleged PT Putra Utama Lestari (PT PUL) of clearing 19 ha of forest in Area 1 and 2 ha of forest were cleared in Area 2 between 7 May 2019 and 11 Sept 2019.

July 2019

Apical demanded a clarification from DSN Group on the grievance case reported.

DSN informed that they has stopped land clearing in PT. PSA since 2015. Based on their investigation, the land clearing (coordinate S:-0.30145 E: 111.26466) around 5.67 ha inside the Izin lokasi of PT PSA concession was conducted by local communities. The response from DSN can be found here.

DSN Group has reported the issue to Muspika (Musyawarah Pimpinan Kecamatan – community leaders meeting at district level) and to coordinate with the local government on this matter.

Apical conducted desktop analysis based on the concession map provided by DSN. We found that the coordinate given in Mighty Earth report is located about 70.5 from PT PSA. The actual location of the land clearing is located outside of the concession. Our desktop analysis can be found here.

October 2019

Apical seek clarification on the latest allegation of deforestation inside PT Putra Utama Lestari.

DSN has conducted field investigation on 14 Oct 2019 to 16 Oct 2019. Based on the investigation, they found that all the 3 alleged area of land clearing located outside of the concession and clearing conducted by local community.

To prevent further encroachment, the case had been filed to local authorities and a socialization to the local communities had been conducted.

DSN also informed that PT PUL concession boundaries have been revised and shared with Apical the cadastral map. The response can be found here.

DSN also shared the notification sent to RSPO on the revised map of both PT PSA and PT PUL. Apical has conducted desktop analysis based on the cadastral map shared to us.

We verified that the three land clearing mentioned located outside of the concession with one coordinate of a land clearing mentioned in the Mighty Earth located about 30km from the PT PUL. Our analysis can be found here.

The RSPO has published the revised boundaries of PT PSA & PT PUL.

July 2020

Following further engagement with Mighty Earth regarding the issue of the concession boundaries, this matter has been resolved to Mighty Earth’s satisfaction.

In addition, there is also a dedicated Social, Security and Licensing (SSL) department in each refinery we own, to handle social and licensing matters in compliance with national regulations as well as Apical Sustainability Policy. The team also oversees Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to support better livelihoods in local communities.

Achieving sustainability goals requires more than just collaboration with our key stakeholders. Collaboration across industries and peer companies is also crucial and hence, we constantly look for and participate in new partnerships, relevant industry membership and certification schemes.

We participate in industry membership and certification schemes such as the Tropical Forest Alliance 2020, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), including the RSPO P&C Review Taskforce and the RSPO Indonesia National Interpretation Working Group, the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), and the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO)
